Originally founded by Laura as ‘Laura Goves Social Media Marketing’, after a couple of years, we decided it should become a family enterprise and Owen joined the ‘team’.
I stumbled upon this industry by accident. As a 90s baby, no one grew up wanting to be a ‘Social Media Manager’- it wasn’t a thing. I didn’t know anything more than MSN, Bebo and suchlike for most of my teenage years.
A rocky start to adulthood which involved a teenage pregnancy, single parenthood, a gap in my CV that left me virtually unemployable; self-employment was the only option. Feet pics weren’t around in 2012…
That being said, as I read the above paragraph, maybe I should’ve written a book or pitched the movie…
Anyway, I digress- I earnt an honourable living as a self-employed beauty therapist in sunny Bournemouth. A business I built from scratch using only Social Media – I know, impressive!
A few tragedies later (this book is seeming like a good idea), I decided that I wanted a less person-facing role. Did I mention my business was home-based? A logistical nightmare for someone with social anxiety. 10/10 for effort though.
So, one sunny afternoon I decided to order an embroidery machine from America having never so much as picked up a needle, and decided this was my way to dive back into the world of self-employment. Risky? Yes. Delusional? Absolutely.
“What happened next?” I hear you ask as you perch on the edge of your seat with 2nd hand anxiety… strangely enough what happened next dumbfounded me too.
Using Facebook and Instagram alone, I went from having never held a needle to owning a successful clothing business which in the space of 18 months became a trademarked brand, had its own office space and enabled my husband to leave his full- time job.
They do say, to be a success you do have to be a little delulu.
